On Saturday, August 17th the Honey Hush Boutique Limited Late Model drivers returned to Anderson Motor Speedway, after having a month off from action. The evening was shaping up to be one of the best nights of short track racing with all of the talent in the field. Caleb Heady was making his debut in the Roberts Racing #18 Limited Late Model, Heady who was a former competitor in the Southeast Legends Tour and then went on to compete in the Smart Modified Tour and picked up the championship in 2022. Ralph Carnes also returning to action with the series, has always been a threat to everyone when he shows up, and his teammate Justin Southerlin picked up the win the last time out in June. Justin Sorrow also returned to action, he picked up the season opener win but has not competed since the first trip to Lonesome Pine.
The first practice was up and it was Caleb Heady topped the charts, Lance Gatlin, (who is still inching closer to his first win this season) was second fastest, followed by Chase Pollard, and returning to the series, (2021 Southeast Super Truck Series Champion) Clark Houston the fourth fastest time, and rounding out the top five was Asheville’s Roger Powell. Final Practice was up next and it was Houston who topped the charts in his Alps Mountain Affordable Hearing Chevrolet, followed by Gatlin, Tristen Barnes, Gary Greenwood Jr, and Powell. Qualifying was up next and Jeff Caldwell with Jeff’s Auto Sales LLC and Bradleigh Martin with Honey Hush Boutique threw in a extra $200 bucks for the Renegade Race Fuel Pole Award winner, and that was Hickory, North Carolina’s Clark Houston.
Houston rolled a four on the invert dice which now set Eugene Norton to start in the top spot with Heady starting on his outside. Bryan Ramey pulled his Double Aught Injury Lawyers pace car down on to pit road, and flag man Dylan Greene waved the green flag. The drivers soared off into turn one, Norton quickly jumped out front. Five laps down in the books, and Norton was still your leader, Heady was now facing pressure as Houston was trying to work around the #18 machine. Norton had led the first fifteen laps of the race, but now Houston had caught up to his rear bumper. Lap 19 we seen a new leader as Houston powered his #6 Chevrolet to the front of the field by just a nose over Norton. Heady seen the open window just a few laps later and he took advantage of the situation, as he moved Norton back to third position. Norton however was not able to hold onto the third spot long as Gatlin quickly disposed of Norton’s #27, with Austin Peters trying to fight off Carnes for the fith position.
The final ten laps were up for grabs, and Heady who had been riding back in second a majority of the race finally began to turn the heat up on Houston. With six laps to go, Heady finally seen his shot and capitalized on it as he powered past Houston to take over the lead. Heady would go on to capture his first career SEST Honey Hush Boutique Limited Late Model victory in his Roberts Racing #18 Ford Mustang. “I knew we had a good gap in third place, I was just trying to make sure we held that right rear good. I think we were able to save a little more than him (Houston) at the end so we were able to get around him well. Huge thanks to David Roberts, and the whole Roberts Racing. This is quite unbelievable to get the first win in my first late model start” exclaimed Caleb Heady in Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet/ Double Aught Injury Lawyers Victory Lane.
The series will be back in action on Saturday, September 7. And that venue will be announced really soon. Stay tuned to our social media sites as well as our website www.southeastsupertrucks.com
