On Saturday August 17th the Southeast Super Truck Series drivers returned to action, they made the trip back down to Anderson Motor Speedway for Double Aught Injury Lawyers Double Purse Night at the races. DJ Canipe returned to the series, your 2022 Super Truck Champion and 2020/2021 Honey Hush Limited Late Model Champion. Ed Surrett finally returned to action as well for the first time this season. Luke Sorrow climbed on board the Roberts Racing #9 for the weekend. Chris Smith also found his way back with the series for his first appearance of the season. Jesse Smith also made his return to the series for the first time this season after battling a eye injury just before the season began.
First practice was up and it was Fallston, North Carolina’s DJ Canipe who put his #29 Dwight Huffman Racing Chevrolet Silverado on top of the charts with a time of 15.938. Cameron Williams who is chasing his first win of the season, followed pursuit in second. Tim Lollis, who picked up the win on opening night rounded out third. Luke Sorrow and Jay Norville rounded out your top five. Final Practice was up next, and Cameron Williams clawed his way to the top of the speed charts. Josh Goble, Ed Surrett, Tim Lollis and Chris Smith rounded out your top five. Canipe would go on to capture the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award, he also rolled a four on the invert dice. This now set the only repeat winner of the year Kyle Barnes to start the 75 lap feature from the top spot.
The pace truck dove down onto pit road to kick off the main event of the night. Barnes and Surrett led the field down into turn one for the first time. Barnes quickly pulled ahead of Surrett’s #8 and took the lead coming out of turn two. The first caution flew on lap one as Lollis made slight contact to the left rear of Josh Gobles #65 Utiltough Chevrolet, resulting in Goble going around in turn three. Barnes led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, Surrett seemed to have a slight advantage as the field soared off into turn one, coming out of two Barnes and Surrett made contact, resulting in Surrett slowing way down to avoid making contact with the outside wall. Cameron Williams with no where to go drove up underneath the rear bumper of Surrett, Bennie Davis spun to avoid the calamity in front of him, meanwhile Tim Lollis and Tony Edwards tangled together in rear who were both also trying to avoid the incident in front of them.
Davis, Lollis, and Surrett were able to drive away from the incident on the track and come to the aide of their crews on pit road. Where as Williams and Edwards had to be helped back to the pit area by wreckers ending their nights early. Once the red flag was lifted, Barnes led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone this time with Canipe on his outside. Canipe was able to power past Barnes to take over the lead. The third caution flew on lap eight as Surrett was trying to make a drive back to the front of the field made contact with the left rear of the Norville Auctions #90 Ford F150 piloted by Jay Norville. Norville went around in turn three, but was able to turn back around and get headed in the right direction. Canipe led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone. However the caution flew just a lap later as a bumper bar was laying in the middle of the track going into turn three. Once again Canipe led the field back the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, and hit his marks going into turn one. The fifth caution flew on lap 65, with just ten laps remaining as Bennie Davis looped his #66 Bucket List Racing Silverado around on the front stretch.
Canipe led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, however before the field could complete a lap the caution flew for the sixth time as Lollis’s Busted Knuckle Tire & Auto Silverado snapped loose and collected Chris Smith. Both drivers were able to fire back up under their own power and continue on. Canipe would go on to capture the victory “Yeah it has been a while, but I can’t thank everybody at DHR; Ashley, Casper, Allen, Clark, Alex, just everybody. We struggled a little bit yesterday, still wasn’t bad. We changed about everything we could this morning, We always run pretty good here, we know when we come here we got a good chance to win” stated Canipe in Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet/ Double Aught Injury Lawyers Victory Lane.
