After missing the previous scheduled race date at Newport Speedway due to Hurricane Helene, the series returned to action for one final showdown. The teams and drivers made the trip up to East Tennessee to help reopen the speedway and bring back the first short track race held there since 2017. The Southeast Super Trucks were ready to put on a spectacular show for the amazing fans in attendance for one final time this season. Chuck Ward and all of his awesome staff has done a phenomenal job renovating a once lost speedway. A place that will be a show place in the Southeast for a long time to come.
Josh Goble came into the evening with the points lead and was just focusing on finishing out the night in one piece so he could capture the championship, Honey Hush Boutique Limited Late Model driver Lance Gatlin was attempting to pull double duty and make his debut in the super trucks. It was Newport, Tennessee’s Ed Surrett who topped the only practice round held that morning with a fast time of 13.347. Qualifying was up next and it was new comer to the series Gatlin who claimed the Renegade Race Fuel’s pole award in front of his hometown crowd. Gatlin would roll a four on the invert dice, which now set Goble to start the race in the top spot for the 50 lap feature.
The Double Aught Injury Lawyers pace car pulled onto pit road, and flagman Dylan Greene waved the green flag over the field. Goble soared off into turn one with Surrett on his outside. Surrett was able to out power Goble to take over the lead on lap one. Surrett led the first half of the race and had no pressure, that was until Lollis slipped by Goble to take over second. Lollis was on a mission, as lap by lap he was clicking off faster lap times than the leader and slowly closing the gap down. The first caution flew on lap 28 as the #5 of Tim Dale spun around in the middle of turn one and two and came to a rest facing the wrong way. Lollis led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone with Goble on his outside. Surrett was able to slide down to the bottom of the track and under Goble, and would go on to take over the second position, he also brought the #15 T&D Trucking F150 with him of Cameron Williams.
With the final ten laps left of the race, Williams had a strong going as he came out of turn four and got into the left rear of Ed Surrett, resulting in Surrett spinning out coming across the start finish line. Lollis led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, this time with Williams restarting on his outside. Lollis went on to pick up the final checkered flag of the season, “I tell you what, that is probably the best truck I have ever had here. It was just flawless, but to win the first one and to win the last one and wrecked all of the other ones, I still feel pretty good. We raced five times and totaled out three times, we ended finishing third at Lonesome Pine, first at Anderson and first here so I feel pretty good with the way the truck is performing and the team is performing. I just have to thank God for allowing us to do this because without him we cant do anything anyways. I want to thank my family, my wife, my kids, my grandkids, this was just a good time coming.” Stated Lollis in Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet Victory Lane.
“It means a lot, it really does, in 2005 we won the championship at Tri-County, we got out of racing for a little while. We got back to racing with John Mamph, and almost 20 years later we were able to get another one (Championship) it feels pretty good. Its really good for all of the guys who help me, who work so hard on this thing, it’s a family deal, so that makes it even better. John Mamph is just like family to us, Im really glad to get this for him, he put his faith in me and my guys to run this thing. So it feels really good to get it for him. We didn’t dominate, we didn’t win a race, that kind of stings a little bit, just a little bittersweet. We were here for all of them, we did the best we could, we took care of our stuff the best we could. This is the best group of sponsors I have ever had, I can’t thank them enough. Its amazing for what they have done for me this year and means a lot. Smart Electric, Utilitough, Priority Electric, Blackbear Transmission, Appalachian Stone, Advance Auto Parts, Heritage Finance, Im just blessed with those folks.” Exclaimed your 2024 Southeast Super Truck Series Champion Josh Goble.
