The long awaited off season was finally in the rear view mirror for the best of the best Limited Late Model drivers. A lot of changes for some of the drivers over the off season, two time defending Champion DJ Canipe moved up to the Super Trucks, Jacob Bradley moved up to the Limiteds from Bandoleros, Joey Braun who picked up a couple wins during the Tri-County Speedway weekly programs decided to make his debut with the Southeast Super Truck Series, Chase Pollard (son of Larry Pollard who owns and operates LP Gear and Pollards Raceway Park in Taylorsville, NC, and also Grandson of NASCAR Legend Harry Gant) decided to return back behind the wheel of a car after taking a few years off from regular weekly racing at Hickory Motor Speedway, Bryce Applegate moved up from Legends Car racing.
John Gallman who has competed with the series for a long time and been a huge supporter of the series was determined to start off the year with a bang. The teams all unloaded and began thrashing on their cars for the day, it was a beautiful afternoon in the Piedmonts of South Carolina. The first practice round it was Heath Silver (son of the Original Coors Light Silver Bullet Nascar Cup Series car Ronnie Silver) set the fast time, 16.595. Applegate was right behind him in second with a time of 16.823. The final practice round there was only two drivers who took to the track, and those were of Justin Sorrow and Chase Pollard. Sorrows captured the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award in Qualifying, however he rolled a four on the invert dice which now put Gallman starting on top spot with Eric Wallace on the outside.
The Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet paced the field around the speedway warming up the engines, and tires. The Green flag waved high from our series flagman Timmy Hutson, Gallman hammered down on the gas pedal, however Wallace wasn’t backing down from the fight the duo stayed side by side with Joey Braun and Justin Sorrows side by side in the second row. Gallman went on to lead the first lap of the 50 lap $1500 to win feature race by half a car length over Wallace. The first five laps were now in the books, as Gallman opened up a .8 second lead over Wallace. Eric now had his mirror full of new comer driver Joey Braun. The first caution flew on lap six as the #37 of Chris Phipps looped it around in turn two and almost collecting the #55 of Silver.
Gallman worked his way inside KRC Power Steering Restart Zone as the Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet pace truck dove onto pit road. The #81 of Gallman took off once again, and as the field came out of turn two, Gallman had already pulled out in front of Wallace. The second caution flew on lap eight as debris from the #2 of Ralph Carnes was laying right in the racing groove in turn four. Gallman once again hit his marks as he went through the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, this time Wallace was not backing down from the fight, he stayed right beside of the #81. The third caution flew on lap 19, as the #28 of Bub Haney went around on the front stretch. This pre-maturely ended Haney’s night as he drove back to the pit area.
Gallman once again led the field back into the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone and took off. Braun took advantage of this caution as he immediately went to work on the #12 of Wallace. Braun dove to the inside and was not backing down from the fight. Braun took over the second position, moving Wallace back to third. Gallman who led the whole race crossed the start finish line for the halfway mark of the 50 lap feature. Now all of a sudden the #81 of Gallman began to have the image of the black #41 of Braun all in the rear view mirror. Braun began to work on the inside of Gallman, the pair raced side by side for a couple laps before the fans seen a new leader of the night, Joey Braun was able to pull out front on lap 32.
With five laps remaining, Braun opened up the lead to a two second margin over Gallman. Joey Braun went on to capture his first SEST Limited Late Model Series victory in his Dwight Huffman Racing prepared machine. “Yeah its just hard to come from a legends cars where I run at Riverhead, you got 20 laps, starting 16th on a handicapped every week, so you gotta charge to the front, which means you still got to be aggressive and keep the tires underneath and not make anybody mad. This is the only funding was to run this race, I love being here, I feel like I deserve to be here. This is special to me” stated Joey Braun in Rick Hendricks City Chevrolet Victory Lane Presented by Double Aught Injury Lawyers.
The series will have a few weeks off before heading to the “Concrete Jungle” Kingsport Speedway on May 14th.
