Ashton Higgins picked up the first victory of the season in the SEST Limited Late Models at Anderson Motor Speedway on March 27th. He was looking forward to carrying his momentum into another track where he has had a lot of success at. The series headed to Tri-County Speedway on May 8th. Higgins topped the first practice charts with a time of 16.526, in the second round of practice it was Lenoir, North Carolina’s Josh Goble who found himself on top of the speed charts.
Goble went on to capture the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award with a time of 16.357 over Kyle Beattie. Goble rolled a five on the invert dice, which now set Higgins starting the feature with Taylor Nesbitt Campbell on the outside front row. The Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet Pace Truck dove onto pit road, and Ashton Higgins quickly turned the after burners on, and took off. Chris Phipps worked his way up into second setting his sights on Higgins. The battle for third began to heat up with just three laps on the board, Nesbitt now had her hands full with Beattie, Goble, DJ Canipe and TJ Lollis.
Twenty laps in, and Lollis finally seen his opportunity to make his pass on the reigning Champion of Canipe. The duo raced side by side for five laps, until Lollis was finally able to pull past Canipe and take over the sixth position. The first caution flew on lap 25, as Heath Silver went around on the back stretch. Higgins paced the field back to the green flag as Phipps restarted on his outside. Phipps did not get the restart he needed, this opened the door Beattie as he drove to the outside of the #37 of Phipps. Lollis was the biggest beneficiary of the restart as he was now right in the middle of the second place battle. The trio of drivers were not about to give a inch to the other, Lollis pulled to the outside of Phipps, as they came out the fourth turn, Beattie got a little loose and Lollis and Phipps touched. They all drove in turn one three wide, Lollis backed out and Phipps made contact to the left rear of Beattie. The #45 of Beattie got sideways with Phipps right up against him resulting in heavy body damage to the pair of drivers.
On the restart Higgins once again paced the field back to the green flag, Lollis who restarted on the inside started early but let of the gas to let the leader back in front. However this stacked up the rest of the field. The #81 of John Gallman had no where to go as everyone jammed on their brakes and he went under the rear of Taylor sending her around. Once again Higgins led the drivers back to the green flag, Goble now found himself in contention for the lead. The caution flew again with just 35 laps remaining as Phipps made contact with the wall, and bounced off collecting Lollis.
Higgins once again paced the field back to the green flag. Lollis hit his marks one more time as he passed the drivers and was now in behind the #9 of Higgins.
The caution flew again just seven laps later for debris in turn three and four. Higgins soared back to life on the restart, Canipe and Goble were fighting for third. Gallman and Nesbitt were also side by side for fourth with Phipps lurking in their rear view mirror. The caution flew again as the #28 of Bub Haney spun around on the track. Just a few laps later on the restart the caution flew again as a tail pipe fell off a drivers car on the front straight away. The field were in the last third of the race, it was getting down to the nitty gritty. Higgins was more than ready to get this race over and continue his winning streak. He hit his marks as the green flag flew, it was Gallman who was the big mover this time as he was now in second. With just three laps remaining in the race, the caution flew again as Phipps made contact in the left rear of Gallman sending the #81 around. Josh Goble jammed on his brakes and spun to avoid hitting Gallman. The heartbreak moment sunk in for the leader of Ashton Higgins as his transmission let go under caution.
TJ Lollis went on to capture his first SEST Limited Late Model win over Canipe. The series will head up to Lonesome Pine Raceway in the mountains of Virginia on May 22nd. For more information log on to www.southeastsupertrucks.com, or you can stay up to date on visiting our social media sites.
