8/3: The SEST Limited Late Models roared into Tri-County Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 27th. They
were scheduled to run Twin 50's to make up a lost rain date from earlier in the year. The only three
winners so far this year Ralph Carnes, Tanner Brookshire, and Lee Tissot. As it neared time for the first
practice it was Kingsport, Tennessee's Alex Miller who found himself on top of the speed charts with a
time of 17.099. The final practice it was Taylorsville's Mark Goin who picked up the pace and found
himself fastest with a lap of 17.119. Qualifying was up next for the best drivers in the Southeast.
Driver of the #65 BlackBear Transmission Josh Goble captured the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award
with a lap of 16.697. Ralph Carnes set the second fastest qualifying lap, just .002 off of the pole. Goble
rolled a five for the invert dice in the first race, which now allowed Fairview, North Carolina's Eric Green
to start the first twin on the top spot with Tissot on his outside. Both drivers who are long time
competitors in the southeast also raced each other at the former Asheville Motor Speedway. The pair
follwed the City Chevrolet pace truck around the track and watched it dive off onto pit road. Tissot took
advantage of the start, and shot off like a rocket, Eric dropped back in line behind the #27 David Ball
Construction Chevrolet. He then caught heat quickly from Ralph Carnes. Ralph worked his way past Eric
and set his sights on Tissot.
Chris Phipps who was trying to work his way passed Green, bobbled coming out of the corner, now
allowed Josh Goble to drive up beside of him. The first caution flew on lap 8 as Kyle Whisner slowed on
the track and came to the aide of his crew. Tissot paced the field back to the green flag, Goble hung right
with the top two drivers. The second caution came out as #7 Jeff Allen spun around coming out of turn
four. Once again Lee Tissot led the field back to the green flag with Carnes on his outside. Goble
seemed to be having something a miss the #65 Chevrolet as he began to slowly drift back through the
field. Caution flew again as #12 Kristen Wallace spun in turn four and what appeared to be her engine
letting go. After a lengthy red flag to get the track cleaned up and back in shape, the drivers were ready
to get back under way.
Tissot one more time paced the field to the green, two drivers quickly went to work trying to move up
through the field, Mark Goin who was running in third and John Gallman who was working on inside the
top ten. Caution flew again as TJ Lollis went around backwards in turn three and collected Alex Miller
who hit Lollis head on. Ending both drivers nights pre-maturely. And for another time, Tissot would lead
the field back to the green. This time Goin's machine seemed a little off, Green captured the third
position back from Goin. Tanner Brookshire was working the high side around the 4/10ths mile. He was
catching the front pack quickly. Tissot began to pull away from the field and everyone was inside the final
ten laps of the race when second place Eric Green went around coming out of turn four.
This would set up to be a exciting short track shoot out to the end. Tissot led the field back to the green,
Green restarted at the tail end of the lead lap. Again on the restart Goin's #77 TriboDyn Lubricants
Chevrolet didn't take off as it should have, Brookshire slipped by, and John Gallman began to work on
the inside of Mark. Green caught up to the rear bumper of the two. The battle for fourth was heating up,
Tissot crossed the finish line picking up his second win of th season, Ralph Carnes, Tanner Brookshire,
John Gallman and Mark Goin rounded out the top five. Meanwhile during the rest of the first race, Josh
Gobles crew had been fuirously working hard on swapping engines out to get him ready for the
second race.
The second Twin 50 race was hoping to go more smoothly as the track's curfew was coming into play.
Tissot would start on the pole again after the invert. Chris Phipps started second on the outside. The
green flag waved high in the air, Tissot took off where he left off in the first race, like a bolt of lightening.
Goble's #65 Blackbear Transmission Chevrolet was on fire, literally, the whole engine was engulfed in
flames as he received the black flag and was forced to pit road to extinguish the fire. The battle for fourth
was heating up as John Gallman, Eric Green and Tanner Brookshire were fighting for the position. The
caution flew with 30 laps to go as Kyle Whisner spun in turn four. Tissot led the field back to the green,
Brookshire quickly went to work on Green trying to take over the third position. Tissot was able to hold off
Carnes and take the victory one more time. Ralph Carnes, Tanner Brookshire, Eric Green, Chris Phipps
rounded out the top five.
