The SEST Limited Late Models have put on a fantastic show each week, they headed into the final event of the 2020 season. Tri-County Speedway hosted the series for the last race of the season, “Halloween Heat Championship Night Presented by Jeff’s Auto Sales” on October 31st. The SEST Limited Late Models were set to compete in Twin 40 lap races. As well as Jeff Caldwell helping out as the presenting sponsor, he threw in an additional $500 dollars if a driver could win both twins. On top of Jeff’s bonus T&D Trucking added $500 dollars, now setting up to be a barn burner for the fans.
There was only one practice session, followed by qualifying, then the twin races. Ashton Higgins, who was competing in both the limiteds and the trucks, topped the practice session. Chris Smith, DJ Canipe, Josh Goble, and making her debut with the series, Toni Breidinger rounded out the top five. It was Chris Phipps who captured the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award with a time of 16.338. As the drivers lined up to kick off their first race, Phipps and his teammate and points leader DJ Canipe paced the field around the track. They completed one lap, all remaining side by side as they started the race. Higgins drove to the outside of Goble as they battled it out for third.
Chris Smith and Justin Southerlin were fighting for sixth on the track, neither driver giving an inch. As the field neared the half way mark of the first race, Canipe remained out front. Higgins was working on driving to the front as he passed Phipps taking over second. The first caution flew out on lap 26, as the #44 of Ricky Parker spun around in turn two. Canipe led the field back to the green flag from the outside line, with Higgins on his inside. After a lap of side by side racing, Canipe finally outpowered Higgins and pulled back in front of the field. Higgins started working the high line and found himself on the outside of Canipe. The pair raced door too door for two laps until Higgins clawed his way past the #29 of Canipe. With less than ten laps to go, Goble was having to fight off hard charging Southerlin. The duo raced side by side for several laps until two laps remained, and Phipps decided to make it three wide. They drove three wide down the back stretch and into three and four, until contact was made between Phipps and Southerlin, resulting in Phipps going for a spin cycle and bringing out the caution.
Ashton Higgins would go on to capture the first victory of the day. The second race, the top three inverted setting Goble starting on top with Canipe outside. Goble quickly took off when the green flag flew, and Canipe already began to catch heat from Higgins. Two laps into the feature, Canipe caught Goble and dove to the inside. Canipe was able to pull out front after several laps of fighting for the lead. The first caution flew on lap seven as the #17 of Archie Adams came to a stop in turn two. Canipe chose the outside for the restart with Goble going to the inside line. With the half way mark now crossed, the drivers were making last chance passes working towards the front.
Higgins began to slowly fall back through the field. DJ Canipe went on to capture his second career victory of the season and wrapped up the 2020 SEST Limited Late Model Championship. Josh Goble, Justin Southerlin, Chris Smith, and TJ Lollis rounded out the top five. We want to extend a special thanks to PitRow.TV for the
