The Summer time heat set in on Saturday May 12th, as the Southeast Super Truck Series Presented by
City Chevrolet & Textron Off-Road made their way back into Williamston, South Carolina. This was the
series second stop at Anderson Motor Speedway. When the series first visited the famed 3/10th mile
speedway in April, the fans seen a great race with hometown hero Kenneth Headen bringing home the
win.
This night was going to turn into a Rookie versus Veteran battle, North versus South. Past Champions
battling each other, as three time Champion Lee Tissot made his return to the series. Tissot who was
driving Jeff Caldwell's truck, had his sights set out for two time champ Kenneth Headen. Between those
two drivers, competing over the past decade in the Southeast have countless wins. However the Rookies
have been a fierce competetion in the first two races of the season. Ashton Higgins who picked up his
first Super Truck victory at Tri-County Motor Speedway, then went on the following week to pick up his
first ever NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model win at Anderson edging out Headen. Sawyer Frady
who won multiple races in the former Super Stock division, and now moving up to the Super Trucks, is in
a learning curve this season. Frady has shown some serious speed. Madion, Florida's own Taylor
Hosford has shown some mad skills coming off her best finish of the year the last race out at TCMS
(finishing 2nd in her 2nd start).
Ashley Huffman paced the field during the first round of practice setting the fast time, with Toby Hollifield
just three hundredths slower in second. Hollifield has been improving each and every week looking for
his right opportunity to shine. Higgins climbed his way to the top of the charts for the second round of
practice, sending Huffman to second fastest. As the drivers had one last chance to make any neccisary
changes to their trucks. Higgins went on set the fast time for the final round of practice. After they
mounted their race tires, and went through tech, they lined up on pit road to get ready for qualifying.
Headen captured the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award position and rolled a five on the invert dice. This
now set Travelers Rest's own Jamie Barbrey on the top spot with Hosford starting on the outside.
Barbrey has had a string of bad luck starting off this season, so he was looking to get the monkey off of
his back. Hosford on the other hand is coming off of her season best finish, second at Tri-County Motor
Speedway. As Barbrey waited for the City Chevrolet Silverado to duck down onto pit road he prepared
him self. "I just wanted to make sure I made it through turn one, and stay out front as long as I could."
stated Jamie.
Barbrey did just that, he got a quick jump on Hosford and the rest of the field and dove out front in turn
one. However before the field could complete the first lap of the race, Huffman was bumped going into
turn one, and he spun around collecting several other trucks. Huffman and everyone else involved was
able to gather it up and get going again. Barbrey once again paced the field back to the green flag and
took off light a rocket. Hosford dived below Jamie and followed in his tire tracks. Tissot began his
challenge and started picking off drivers one by one until he found himself behind the leader.
After several laps of side by side racing, between Barbrey and Tissot, Tissot was able to take over the
top spot. Barbrey then jumped behind Tissot following every move he made "Once he (Tissot) got by me,
I just decided to follow him and see where I could be better. Because I was in the middle of two of the
best in the series (Tissot and Headen)" Barbrey said. Headen set his sights on the leader as he quickly
began to move towards the front of the field, passing Higgins to take over the third position. Hosford
gave it her all, as she was fighting to stay inside the top five, "I tried to treat every lap as a qualifying run,
you try to drive your hardest during qualifying and I knew I needed to drive my hardest in the race,
because Anderson is a tough track and the leaders usually set a fast pace right at the beggining"
Hosford said.
Frady and Huffman battled hard for several laps with neither one of them not wanting to give an inch.
They gave it their all for several laps, switching back and forth, they finally got together on the track and it
resulted in Huffman making hard contact with the turn two wall and bringing out the second caution of the
night. Tissot trotted around the track with Barbrey on the outside, he took the green flag and it quickly
turned into a three way dance off between Tissot, Barbrey, and Headen. With Tissot able to pull out front
once again, the rest of the field settled down and got into a single file line. On lap 33, the third caution
flew as Higgins was attempting to come down pit road and the #20 machine of Jimmy Roberts got
pinned behind the slow truck of Higgins. Roberts made contact with the rear of Higgins, Higgins spun
around and went backwards down pit road.
On the restart Tissot once again lead the field back to the green flag, and began to stretch his lead out
over the field. Headen went on to capture the checker's followed by Sorrow in second, Barbrey in third,
Hosford in fourth, and Greg Nix rounding out the top five.
