The Southeast Super Truck drivers haven’t competed this season yet. Although they have had plenty of practice. Opening night at Anderson Motor Speedway on March 27th, they practiced, qualified but fell short of getting a lap in for the race due to rain moving in. So it was safe to say that the drivers and teams were more than ready to battle it out on the track. Tri-County Speedway in Hudson, North Carolina hosted the series for the first of three stops this season on Saturday, May 8th.
Ashton Higgins set the fastest time in both practice rounds in his #9 Chevrolet Silverado. Qualifying was up next for the fourteen drivers. Little did we know we would see the track record broken twice this day, Clark Houston claimed the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award with a blistering time of 15.892 and Higgins second fastest with a time of 15.960. Houston rolled a five on the invert dice which now would set Tanner Carter to start the race in the top spot with Taylor Hosford starting on his outside.
When the green flag flew, the field dived into turn one and two. It was Hosford who powered to the front down the back straight away and ahead of Carter. Hosford led the first five laps of the feature before Higgins worked his way past her. Ten laps into the race, Hosford began to feel the heat as Veteran short track driver Marty Ward was right in her rear view mirror. As the pair raced side by side, it opened the door for Houston as it now became a three-way battle for second. Ward took over the position and Houston pulled to the inside of Hosford and set his sights on Ward. The first caution flew on lap 20, as Tim Lollis dove to the inside of Hunter Jarrett and the pair made contact and both drivers spinning in turn four.
Higgins chose the outside line which put Houston on the inside for the restart. The field came out of turn four into the restart box, Higgins appeared to have spun his tires causing Hosford to drive under the #9 machine. The second caution flew on lap 39 as Hunter Jarrett spun around coming out of turn two. Houston led the drivers back to the green flag, Ward had his hands full as Tanner Carter and Sheflon Clay were right there in the mix. The caution flew again just a couple laps later as Jarrett spun around coming out of turn four and came to a stop at the entrance to pit road. Houston paced the field back to the green once again with 34 laps remaining. Houston and Higgins were side by side going into one and two, as they came out onto the back stretch, Higgins truck broke loose and the rear kicked around, but the young gun saved his truck from going around.
Clark Houston went on to capture his first win of the season in his Dwight Huffman Racing #6 Alps Mountain Affordable Hearing, Duck Graphics Chevrolet Silverado. The series will head up to the mountains in Virginia, Lonesome Pine Raceway on May 22nd.
