The third stop for the Southeast Super Truck Series Presented by Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet took place at Kingsport Speedway on Saturday July 11th. The track known as the “Concrete Jungle” never fails to prove it is a driver’s track. The teams all unloaded to prepare for the day. The driver from Denton, North Carolina, Clint King, topped the first round of practice with Jacob Owens, and Tanner Carter rounding the top three. Owens found himself the final practice followed by King and Kenneth Headen.
Qualifying was up next for the driver’s, King claimed the Renegade Race Fuel’s Pole Award. The field paced around the speedway, patiently waiting on the green flag to fall for the first Twin-50 Lap feature. King hit his marks and jumped out front, once the race was under way. Jacob Owens ducked in behind the reigning series champion and followed the driver. Driver of the Speed Energy Drinks #33 Chevrolet Silverado worked his way into the third place. However the battle for sixth was the one to watch on the track, as it was between Clark Houston, Kenneth Headen and Taylor Hosford.
The first caution flew as the field was working their way around a slower truck of Bennie Davis. As Davis was coming out of turn two, contact was made into the quarter panel of Kenneth Headen, sending Headen around. King led the field back to the green flag with Owens restarting on his outside. Just a few laps back into the rhythm of the race, Headen who restarted at the tail end of the lead lap, already found himself back up to seventh. Jamie Barbrey, the driver out of Travelers Rest, SC had a incredible run going and worked his way past Suggs and taking over fourth. He would then set his sights on the young driver out of Monroe, GA of Tanner Carter.
The second caution flew with just 18 laps remaining, as Davis and Headen made contact again in turn two. King led the field back to the green flag, however as they came back around to complete the lap, Barbrey and Owens tangled on the front stretch resulting in Owens going around. Clark Houston just barely squeezing through the gap that he instantly had between Owens and the inside wall with just a tad bit of damage to the right side. King once again in cat bird’s seat was ready to finish the first twin race off. This time he had Carter restarting on the outside. The green was out, and Carter had full momentum as the pair raced side by side for a couple laps until King was able to pull back out in front. The battle for third was a fierce fight between Barbrey, Suggs, and Headen. The caution flew once again as Suggs and Headen were racing side by side, Suggs brushed the outside wall and bounced back into Headen. Kenneth went around with several trucks scurrying through out trying to avoid hitting the #99 Ford F-150.
It was shaping up to be a ten-lap shootout until the end, King hit his marks and took off. Tanner Carter was not about to go down with out a fight, as he stayed right with the leader of King. They entered into turn one, and made contact, the leader Clint King went around in front of the whole field. Carter who now found himself out front led the field back to the green with Jamie Barbrey on the outside. This time it was the driver of the #21 Barbrey Steel machine who was able to capitalize and take over the lead. After several years of hard work and let downs, Jamie Barbrey went on to capture his first ever Southeast Super Truck Victory. Tanner Carter, Clint King, Jacob Owens, and Kenneth Headen rounded out the top five.
The second Twin 50 Super Truck race was capped off the end of the night, with Barbrey having mechanical issues and could not get started. Headen would inherit the starting position after the invert and Owens on the outside. The field took the green flag, as they went into the first turn, King was on a mission as he moved past the lone female in the group of Taylor Hosford. After five laps of side by side racing King was able to take over the top spot from short track veteran of Headen. The rest of the race would go green until the end with Clint King picking up the second twin feature win. Kenneth Headen, Taylor Hosford, Clark Houston, and Ralph Carnes rounded out the top five.
The SEST Series will take a week off, then head to the newly revamped Tri-County Speedway in Hudson, North Carolina on the 25th.
