The Southeast Super Trucks made their return to Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, Virginia. After a few year hiatus from the speedway, the teams were eager to make laps around the historical 3/8ths mile oval. The track has seen some changes since all the dirt was removed from the racing surface, new asphalt applied in the corners. There was three practice rounds for the drivers to take advantage of, Clark Houston topped the first round with a time of 16.315, Tanner Carter and Kenneth Headen rounded out the top three. The second round it was Taylor Hosford who clawed her way to the top of the speed charts with a best lap of 16.417; Kenneth Headen and Tanner Carter rounded out the top three. The final round of practice it was Tanner Carter who set the pace followed by Jamie Barbrey and Tim Dale.
Qualifying was up next for the drivers, where Hickory, North Carolina’s Clark Houston put his #6 Alps Mtn Affordable Hearing Chevrolet Silverado on the Renegade Race Fuel Pole Award. Clark rolled a five on the invert dice, which now placed Jack Galunke up in the captain’s seat for the feature race. As the field rolled into turn one after taking the green flag, it was Tanner Carter who flipped the switch and took over the lead. Jamie Barbrey and Clark Houston quickly went to work on Galunke trying to move past him into second and third. The first caution flew seven laps into the race as Tim Dale and Bennie Davis get together on the back stretch, resulting in a early exit for Tim.
Carter paced the field back to the green flag to get the remaining 68 laps in. It was Barbrey that took advantage of the restart and put his nose out in front of Carter. Two laps into the restart, Barbrey got loose coming out of turn four and slipped up opening the door for Houston to work to the inside of him and take over second. Barbrey now began to have a mirror full of the female driver who has had a series of runner up finishes. Houston who had been slowly reeling down the leader finally caught up to the rear bumper of Carter. Houston dove to the inside where the pair raced side by side for a couple laps, until Houston was able to make the power move past the young gun. This opened the door for Barbrey and Hosford as they tried to work under Carter.
The second caution flew on lap 26 as Bennie Davis looped it around coming out of turn two. Houston led the pack back to the green flag. Ten laps into the restart, it was now Barbrey who had a mirror full of Hosford, they raced door to door for several laps until the lady driver worked her way past Barbrey and moving into second. The race was now into the final twenty laps of the race, and Houston who had a pretty dominant lead was now trying to hold off Hosford. Clark Houston went on to claim his first victory of the 2020 season with Hosford nipping at his heels. Jamie Barbrey, Kenneth Headen, and Tanner Carter rounded out the top five.
The series will invade the Piedmont of South Carolina once again this Saturday evening for the next round at Anderson Motor Speedway, then onto Kingsport Speedway on October 3rd.
