10/31: HUDSON, N.C. - The Southeast Super Trucks headed into the final weekend of the 2020 season. Tri-County Speedway hosted the series in what was called “Halloween Heat Championship Night Presented by Jeff’s Auto Sales” on Saturday October 31st. The series would go off in the afternoon competing in Twin 40 Lap races. Jeff Caldwell with Jeff’s Auto Sales put up an additional $500 bucks to any driver that could win both races, on top of that Tony with T&D Trucking also put up $500 now adding up to $1,000 on top of the regular purse payout. There was only one round of practice with qualifying to immediately follow.
Ashton Higgins topped the practice charts with a time of 16.285, he was followed by Charlie Watson, Jamie Barbrey, Tim Lollis and Kenneth Headen. Clark Houston went on to capture the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award. The lights went off on the Rick Hendrick’s City Chevrolet Pace Truck for the first twin race, and the field bunched with Houston and Higgins on the front row. They worked there out of turn four and onto the front straight away. Houston quickly jumped out front of the field, and Higgins ducked in behind the #6 machine. As they worked their way back around three and four, young gun Tanner Carter took a look under Tim Lollis making it three wide with Lee Tissot on the outside.
Contact was made to the left rear quarter of Lollis as Carter was pinned up against the inside wall, Lollis spun. However Carter shot up the track and collected Brett Suggs, resulting in both trucks hitting the outside wall. Sheflon Clay had no where to go to avoid the mayhem and made contact to the spinning truck of Lollis, sending the #50 machine into the wall as well. Houston led the field back to the green flag for a complete redo. The driver of the #6 DHR Silverado hit his marks once again, leaving Higgins to defend his second place from Charlie Watson, Taylor Hosford, and Marty Ward.
The field worked past the half-way mark, Higgins was slowly reeling down Houston for the lead. The battle for third began to heat up as Watson had his hands full on the female driver of Taylor Hosford. After multiple attempts to try and clear Watson, Taylor came up half a truck length short. Clark Houston went on to capture the first victory of the day followed by Ashton Higgins, Charlie Watson, Taylor Hosford, and Marty Ward.
The second Twin 40 lap race, the top five was inverted now setting the South Carolina short track veteran Marty Ward on the top spot with Hosford on his outside. The green flag flew over the field and Hosford quickly went to work and took off. Higgins drove to the outside of the #13 Silverado of Hosford and took over the lead before they went into the first turn. Ward dived under Hosford and they were racing side by side, with Watson and Houston both right behind them. The first caution flew on lap one as Lee Tissot drove to the inside of Barbrey coming out of turn two, Tissot got loose and went around. Higgins led the drivers back to the green flag, Houston hit his marks and quickly went to the outside of Hosford battling for second. Jamie Barbrey who had been silent for the majority of the day, was now beginning to make some noise as he drove to the outside of Ward.
The battle for the lead began to heat up with just four laps into the race as Houston was now under Higgins. After four laps of unsuccessful attempts to take over the lead, Houston ducked back behind Higgins, and immediately began to feel pressure from Hosford. The front three trucks were now nose to tail on the speedway, it was anyone’s game. Hosford took a look under Houston trying to take over second, the pair raced door to door for multiple laps. The second caution flew out on the track as Ed Surrett and Lee Tissot tangled on the front stretch. The field lined back up, Higgins your leader once again led the field back to the green flag with just a little over half way left in the feature. Barbrey wanted to make more progress as he was now battling Hosford for third and bringing Clay with him into the mix.
Higgins was able to hold off hard charging Houston for several laps, however you could tell the patience was beginning to wear thin. With just ten laps remaining, Houston was finally able to power by Higgins. Hosford now found herself right behind Houston and beside Higgins, any of the top three drivers could walk away with the win. Higgins made contact with the outside wall on the front stretch, and as he was coming out of turn two the right rear tire went down on the #8C and caused him to spin around to bring out the caution. Houston the race leader now had to worry about holding off hard charging Hosford who was gunning down her first win. The green was back out over the field, they went into turn one and it turned into a three wide battle for second. Sheflon Clay and Jamie Barbrey split the #13 truck of Hosford. The fourth caution flew on the track for debris with just six laps remaining.
Houston paced the field back to the green flag and would go on to capture his second victory of the day bringing home the extra $1,000 bonus, third win of the year. He was followed by Sheflon Clay, Jamie Barbrey, Taylor Hosford, and Marty Ward. Kenneth Headen went on to capture his fourth Southeast Super Trucks Championship, now topping Lee Tissot’s who has three.
