8/10: The midpoint of the season had arrived and the teams were preparing for round six of the Southeast
Super Trucks Presented by City Chevrolet. They headed to the upstate of South Carolina at the famed
3/8th's mile oval of Anderson Motor Speedway. The summer heat has set in, and so has the
championship hunt.
The first practice session seen Newport, Tennessee's Ed Surrett topping the speed charts in his Universal Construction Silverado with a lap time of 15.903. Ashton Higgins, Ralph Carnes, Kenneth Headen and Taylor Hosford rounded out the top five. The final practice session rolled around and once again Surrett found himself on top of the speed charts with Ralph Carnes, Ashton Higgins, Kenneth Headen, and Greg Nix rounding out
the top five.
Qualifying was up next for the super stars, however it was Ed Surrett who claimed the Renegade Race
Fuels Pole Award for the drivers with a lap time of 15.877. Surrett would roll a three on the invert dice,
which now set Higgins on the top spot. The green flag was moments away from waving for the Super
Trucks, the drivers were getting prepared, strapped into their machines and was ready to do battle for 75
laps of green flag racing. The field fired up the engines and paced around the speedway warming up
their tires. They came out of turn four, all fifteen drivers were ready to smash on the gas pedal and go.
Higgins led the field to the green flag, but had to wait for the flagman Timmy Hutson to get the race
underway.
Higgins got out front, and set sail. The #9 Big Ivy Guns Silverado appeared to be on a rail around AMS.
The lap times were getting faster for the young hotshoe, of Higgins. The first caution flew on Lap 17 due
to newcome of the series Hunter Jarrett making contact and his fender flew off onto the track. The field
bunched back up, and in double file order. Higgins would start the race with short track veteran Ralph
Carnes restarting on his outside. However on the restart, Carnes hit his marks and took off. The second
caution flew just a few laps later on Lap 30, as Surrett's machine came to a rest in turn two and had to be
helped back to the pits. His crew went under the hood trying to figure out the issue of why it shut off,
however didn't get him back out in time before the green flag flew. Before the field could complete a lap,
the caution flew again as the #07 Warehouse Design Inc of Clint King and #3 Waters Tire of Greg Nix
tangled on the track. Nix looped it around and managed to keep it off the wall, he gathered it back up and
rejoined the field.
Surrett was also able to take advantage of the caution as his crew got his machine fired back up. Carnes
led the field back to the green flag, and waited until he hit the restart box. Three laps later, the #5 Big Ivy
Guns Silverado of Toby Hollifield experienced mechanical issues, and ended his night prematurely. The
battle for fourth began to heat up as Clint and Jamie were racing side by side, with Hosford and Nix right
in the tire tracks. While this battle was going on, Surrett found himself in the mix of things and caught the
rear bumper of Nix. Slight contact was made as the pair raced their hearts out, and Nix once again
received the bad end of the deal and spun around. Suggs also experienced mechanical failure under the
caution, what appeared to be the loss of steering. He was helped to pit road for further evaluations of
his crew.
Carnes set up up for the restart and trying his best to hold off the competition. He sailed off into turn one
with Kenneth Headen fighting for his position. The Caution flew again just one lap later as Nix came to a
rest on the track. Once again Carnes hit his marks on the restart, and took off. However just a couple
laps later the caution flew again, this time as the #21 Barbrey Steel Toyota Tundra of Jamie Barbrey
came to a rest on the track. The field lined back up and prepared for another restart, as they went into
turn one, the #3 of Nix let loose of the engine. This caused for a lengthy red flag to get the oil and other
fluids cleaned up off the racing surface.
When the race got back underway, the drivers were more than eager to finish the night out. The lone
female of Taylor Hosford found herself battling inside the top five trying to put her #13 Annette Bus Lines
Silverado up front. As she began to reel down the top two veteran drivers, her lap times would show she
was quicker. The race came down to the final laps between Carnes and Headen, both drivers being their
hometown track. Bragging rights were all on the line. The #99 S.H. Carter Development of Headen would
claim the victory for the evening making his second win of the year and inch him closer in the
championship hunt. Taylor Hosford, Ed Surrett, Tanner Carter, and Clint King would round out the top
five.
The series will head back to Tri-County Motor Speedway on August 24th for the 7th round of the 2019
Season. For more information please visit our website www.southeastsupertrucks.com or our Social
