HUDSON, N.C. -The SEST Limited Late Models made the return visit to Tri-County Motor Speedway on August 24th. After a rough and bumpy past few weeks and eliminating cars and drivers due to accidents and engine issues, almost everyone was back in full action. A few familiar faces joined the weekends festivities. Returning series champion Ashton Higgins was pulling double duty for the weekend, racing the #18 Myers Auto Sales Chevrolet Impala in the SEST Limited Late Models and his #9 Big Ivy Guns Chevrolet Silverado in the Southeast Super Trucks. Kaleb Pressley who was also returning in his #10 Scooter Doctor Chevrolet Impala owned by Randy Ollis. And fan favorite Davey Smart, who was also making his return visit with the series and was going to put forth every effort in honor of his brother.
The teams all unloaded, topped off the cars and prepared for the first round of practice. The drivers buckled in their machines and rolled out onto the track for the first round of practice. At the end of the ten minute round, it was Weaverville's Ashton Higgins who found himself at the top of the charts with a quick time of 16.894. He was followed by Lee Tissot, Chris Phipps, Tanner Brookshire, and Dan Moore. They had time to make any adjustments to the cars and get ready for the final round. As they concluded the final round it was the past track champion at Tri-County Josh Goble who picked up the pace with his #65 Black Bear Transmissions Impala. Goble's time was 16.984 and was followed by Higgins, Moore, Brookshire, and Kaleb Pressley.
The teams now had to head to tech and get in line for qualifying. All thirteen cars made their qualifying laps, it was the four time winner of the 2019 season Lee Tissot who claimed the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award in his #27 Jeff's Auto Sales Chevrolet with a time of 16.725. Just six tenths from first to last was all that seperated the field. The competition was tight for the night, the talent was even more impressive. Tissot rolled a four on the invert dice, which now set Short track veteran Ralph Carnes to start the race in the top spot in his Door Tech Toyota Camry. As the green flag fell on the field, it was Chris Phipps in his Appalachian Floor Tiles Chevrolet that shot off like a rocket out front. Kaleb Pressley quickly began to hit his marks and followed in behind Phipps.
Pressley waited for the right opportunity, and took the lead away from Phipps. Tissot began to put pressure to the rear bumper of the #37. Tissot dove to the inside and raced Phipps door to door both battling for the second position. Meanwhile Tanner Brookshire began to heat up the battle for fourth, as he pulled to the inside of Ralph Carnes. The drivers completed a third of the race, and the racing was beginning to get heated. The first caution flew on Lap 26 as the #14 Appalachian Motors Chevrolet of Davey Smart went up in smoke.
Pressley chose the high side as to where he wanted to start, allowing Tissot on the bottom. The field came out of turn four and into the restart box, Pressley mashed the gas pedal and was off. Pressley soon began to catch heat off the #27 of Tissot as the gap closed down. Carnes pulled to the inside of Phipps and the pair were racing for third, as well as Josh Goble and John Gallman battling for the fifth spot. Tissot looked in his rear view mirror and seen the #2 machine of Carnes filling it up, he knew it was time to go. Lee picked up the pace and drove to the inside of Pressley where they battled for several laps side by side. Meanwhile John Gallman had worked his way past Goble taking over the fifth place.
Gallman then went to work on trying to get around Phipps for fourth. While the pair was battling, this allowed Goble, Higgins and Chris Smith to catch them. Fourth through eighth were nose to tail. Higgins drove to the outside of Goble trying to take over the sixth position. Goble was able to hold off the hard charging young man of Higgins and pull ahead. Dan Moore, driver of the #22 Wrenchrags Ford Fusion soon his hands full as Eric Green was trying to work his #95 towards the front. Josh Goble finally caught the #81 JWI Heating & Cooling Chevrolet of John Gallman. The pair raced door to door for fifth. Lee Tissot went on to capture his fifth win of the season in his #27 Jeffs Auto Sales, Dave Ball Construction Chevrolet. He was followed by Kaleb Pressley, Ralph Carnes, Josh Goble, and Chris Phipps.
The Series will return to Tri-County Motor Speedway on September 14th as a make up date from earlier this year. It will be Big Ivy Guns night at the races. For more information, please visit our website www.southeastsupertrucks.com or our Social Media pages.
