On Saturday June 19th the Southeast Super Truck Series made their way to Kingsport Speedway. The high banked facility known as the “Concrete Jungle” has produced some of the fiercest battles through out the history. Lee Tissot topped the first afternoon practice round edging Clark Houston and Tanner Carter. Tissot went on to repeat as he found himself on top again in the final practice round. Qualifying was up next and it was Weaverville, NC’s Ashton Higgins who captured the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award, he went on to roll a five on the invert dice.
As the field pulled on to the track for the 75 lap feature, little did the fans or the drivers know what they was about to see. Lollis lead the field to the green flag, however it was Hickory’s Clark Houston who jumped out front. Tissot and Clint King raced door to door battling for third, however with minimal heat in the tires Tissot would wash up the track causing King to back out of the throttle a bit, and this opened the door for Higgins. The first caution flew as the #8 Oakwood Homes Silverado came to a stop in turn two. Houston led the field back to the green flag, Lollis and Tissot were side by side both right in the rear view mirror of Houston. Tissot seen a window and dove to the inside of Houston going into turn three, the pair touched, causing Houston to bobble several times before going up the track.
Houston now found himself back in sixth from the lead, the field clicked off another lap and went into turns one and two. Heavy smoke began to billow and fly from the Quality Heat & Air #88 Silverado of Tissot as he came to a stop in turn two, which brought out the second caution. Lollis led the field back to the green flag, this time it was Higgins who jumped out to the front. Jamie Barbrey now found himself in third began to put the pressure on Lollis. The third caution flew on lap 32 as the #3 Waters Tire machine driven by Marty Ward came to a stop on the track. On the restart Barbrey wasn’t going down without a fight, he hung on the inside line fighting for the lead with Higgins. Higgins would pull back out front and away from the field, with Tissot now working on #21 Barbrey Steel machine.
The final ten laps of the feature and Higgins had pulled away about a straight away over second, Houston and Barbrey were battling for third. With just a couple laps left in the race, heat break sank in again for Higgins as he cut a right front tire down going into turn one and bringing out the final caution. He was assisted into the pits where his team went to work and changed the tire for him and sent him back out on the track. Tissot paced the field back to the green flag, and soared off into turn one. Higgins who restarted in fourth quickly made a daring move past Carter and Barbrey taking over second and set his sites on Tissot, but came up a couple truck lengths short as the veteran Lee Tissot went on to capture the victory.
The series will head back to Tri-County Speedway on July 10th for the fourth race of the season. For more information, news, and announcements keep up with us on our Social Media outlets as well as our website www.southeastsupertrucks.ocm.
