8/3: The Southeast Super Truck Series Presented by City Chevrolet made the return visit to Tri-County Motor
Speedway. The multi-groove track always produces some of the best side by side racing. There has
been only three winners out of the four races so far this season, with Ralph Carnes being the only repeat
winner. The drivers unloaded and made final preperations on their trucks, as they got ready to take to the
track for practice. Carnes seemed to pick up where he left off, as he topped the first Practice Round
speed charts with a lap time of 16.938. Young hotshoe driver Ashton Higgins found his way to the top of
the second practice round speed charts, as he laid down a lap of 16.835. Qualifying was up next for the
drivers.
Higgins went on to claim the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award with a lap time of 16.394, he was
followed by Ralph Carnes, Kenneth Headen, Jacob Owens, and Clark Houston. Higgins rolled a "Three"
on the invert dice, which now set Headen on the top spot. As the green flag flew, and the field went into
turn one, Carnes overpowered Headen and took over the top spot. Higgins quickly went to work on the
#95 machine driven by Jacob Owens, the pair raced side by side fighting for third. Higgins was able to
finally take over the position before setting his sights on the top two trucks. Higgins caught the #99
Headen Ford F-150, then dove to the inside. The Rookie and the veteran put on a show for the fans,
before Higgins drove past Headen. Higgins now focused on the leader of Ralph Carnes.
The first caution flew on lap 12, as the #4S of Jimmy Simmons looped his Perfection First Carpet
Cleaning Silverado around in turn four and easing it into the wall. The field would line back up in double
file order. Carnes waited until he got in the restart box and hit his marks. Higgins jumped to the inside of
Carnes, and the pair raced side by side. Brett Suggs, driver of the #33 A&A Landscapes Silverado took
advantage of the restart and found himself inside the top five and working on the leaders. Houston sailed
his rocket to the inside of the Suggs, and they ran side by side battling for fifth position on the track,
Suggs got up out of the groove and into the marbles coming out turn two. Suggs slammed the back
stretch wall tearing the whole side of the truck off. He was able to limp it back around to his crew and no
caution.
As the field narrowed the race down to the final third of the race, Houston now caught the rear bumper of
Headen, and began to work on him. Headen ran into some slower traffic on the track, and this allowed
Houston to pull to the bottom and take over the fourth position. With just 17 laps remaining in the feature,
the #3 Waters Tire Silverado driven by Greg Nix got sideways off of turn two, and spun around on the
back stretch to bring out the caution. On the restart, Carnes chose to restart on the bottom line, leaving
Higgins on the outside. Young Ashton took advantage of the high line on the restart and took over the
top spot, after Carnes had led the whole race. Carnes tried to reel back in the #9 Big Ivy Guns Silverado
of Higgins but ran out of time. Ashton Higgins went on to capture his first victory of the season. Ralph
Carnes, Clark Houston, Jacob Owens, and Kenneth Headen rounded out the top five.
The series will take a week off then make the drive back down to Anderson Motor Speedway on August
10. Make plans now to join us for another round of exciting short track racing. For more information
