5/18/19 WILLIAMSTON, S.C. - The Southeast Super Truck Series has been sitting idle for the month of April due to mother nature refusing to cooperate with short track racing. However on May 18th, the sun shined bright and set out to be a beautiful day. Seventeen of the best short track racers filed into Anderson Motor Speedway to get the second race of the season underway. They unloaded thier race trucks and made adjustments to get ready for practice. Short track veteran and long time supporter of the series, Ed Surrett paced the first practice on the top of the charts. Ashton Higgins was right behind Ed setting the second fastest time, Kyle Plott who was racing the back up truck for Carnes Racing was third fastest. Ralph Carnes and Kenneth Headen rounded out the top five. The second practice seen Surrett on top of the charts again, with two time Hickory Motor Speedway Super Truck track champion Sheflon Clay in second. Higgins, Headen and Plott rounded out of the top five.
The drivers had one final practice before qualifying, Clay found himself on top of the speed charts. Higgins, Plott, Clint King, and Jamie Barbrey rounded the top five. Ed Surrett went on to claim the Renegade Race Fuel & Oils Pole Award in qualifying, he rolled a five on the invert dice. This now set Travelers Rest, South Carolina's Jamie Barbrey starting on the top spot, with Clint King on his outside. As the field took the green flag, King quickly stuck his nose out front and led the first lap. Barbrey wasn't going to give up without a fight though, he raced hard side by side with King. Barbrey ducked in line behind King and followed his tracks, until three time SEST champion Kenneth Headen drove up to the inside of the #21 truck battling it out for second. King running off the first race of the season momentum started puling away from the field.
Headen who had made the most laps around the speedway waited patiently, each lap he was starting to catch the leader Clint King's 07 Chevrolet. The first caution flew as the #3 machine of Greg Nix spun in turn two. As Headen gathered the field back up he hit his marks on the restart and pulled away. Ralph Carnes went to work on King, fighting for second. Ed Surrett seemed to have a issue a lap after the restart, and as they came out of turn two he slowed down on the outside groove. Several drivers bottled up trying to avoid hitting the #8 machine, causing mayhem everywhere, Nix who took the blunt of this got tagged and hit the inside retaining wall. Headen once again took off to a great restart with King on his outside, as they came back around to complete another lap the #9 truck of Ashton Higgins and #15 of Sheflon Clay tangled in turn three causing the pair to spin and bringing out the third caution. Clay's night ended with this incident, Higgins came down to the pits to the aide of his crew.
Headen paced the field back to the green flag, they completed a couple more laps until the fourth caution flew. The #20 truck of Jimmy Roberts and #33 Brett Suggs made contact coming out turn four, both trucks got sideways and bottled up the rest of the field. Jamie Barbrey who was trying to avoid the incident turned left on the front stretch and collected Madison, Florida's Taylor Hosford. Hosford's night was finished as she substained heavy suspension damage. Higgins spun to avoid the mayhem and stopped right in front of Surrett.
Headen set his marks one more time and pulled away from the field on the restart. A debris caution flew just a few laps later to bring out the fifth caution of the night. Headen once again got off to a great restart and took off, this time it appeared as if the Carnes truck had something a miss on that machine and slowly fell off. As some faster trucks were side by side they went three wide in turn three trying to pass Carnes and tangled together and bringing out the sixth caution of the night. This collected the machines of Carnes, Roberts, and Surrett. Headen once again led the field back to the green flag. Rookie driver Brett Suggs now found himself in the top three, he tried to take a look under King for second but fell back in line.
Toby Hollified was racing side by side with Jamie Barbrey, the pair putting on a great show for the fans, when Ed Surrett dove on the inside of the pair making it three wide going into turn one. Hollifield recieved the bad end of the deal resulting in him getting spun around from the contact. Kenneth Headen went on to collect his first win of the 2019 season, followed by Clint King, Ashton Higgins, Ed Surrett, and Jacob Owens.
The Series will invade AMS on June 8th as part of a double header weekend.
