The Southeast Super Truck Series made the trip back to historic Hickory Motor Speedway for the final stop of the 2023 season. As in the Limited Late Model’s the Super Trucks were in the same situation, with the points battle coming down to wire. Allen Huffman had led the points for the majority of the latter part of the season. Coming into Hickory he knew he just had to finish in front of Tim Lollis, who has been competing with the series since the beginning. Allen who had previously claimed two HMS Super Truck Track Championships. First practice was up for the teams and drivers, Charlie Watson topped the charts in his #9 truck, laying down a fast time of 15.456 just .001 quicker than the 2023 Hickory Motor Speedway Super Truck Champion Ashley Huffman. Charlie Neil, Lee Tissot and Clint King rounded out the top five.
Final practice was up next, Ashley Huffman topped the charts with a time of 15.336. Clint King, Ed Surrett, Charlie Neil and Cameron Williams rounded out the top five. With the series running twin 40 lap races, there was no invert from qualifying. Ashley Huffman claimed the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award. As the Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet pace truck pulled off the track and onto pit road, the field soared to life down the front straight away. Ashley Huffman leading the field into turn one with Charlie Neil on his outside, Clint King and Allen Huffman making up the second row. Ashley led the first lap of the first twin feature race with a heated battle for second right behind the leader. Neil and King going at it, tooth and nail. The first caution came out on lap two as the #17 of Greg Bohanon Jr lost a driveshaft and looped it around, tough break to end his night early. Ashley led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, he quickly cleared the #21 truck of Neil. With twelve laps completed, nothing much up front had changed other than Tissot slipping past the #51 of Allen Huffman. Clint took a look to the inside of Charlie Neil, trying to take over the second position. After a two lap battle, King was indeed able to capture the second place.
Just over the halfway mark, the battle for third was intensifying as Neil had a mirror full of Lee Tissot and Allen Huffman, and at some times the crowd thought they were going to go three-wide. The second caution flew on lap 21 as Allen Huffman and Tissot were battling hard for position coming out of turn four, Huffman made slight contact with the #88 Jeff’s Auto Sales Chevrolet, sending Tissot around. Ashley led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, this time with 2019 SEST Series Champion Clint King starting on his outside. With just ten laps remaining in the first feature race, Allen finally made a opening and drove past Charlie Neil’s #21 machine to take over third, however Tim Lollis was following right in his tire tracks. Ashley Huffman would go on to capture the first Twin 40 feature of the night. “It’s super special, any time you can get a win with the Southeast Super Trucks, racing against the best trucks in the country, set on the pole and lead the most laps and win the race is pretty awesome. I can’t thank off of my guys enough: Platinum Limousine, K&P Roofing, Storm Graphics, Accent Signs, Dexter’s Detailing, Hollars Landscaping & Grading, Carolina Custom Golf Carts, all of the fans for coming out, Jeff & Diane awesome series, really appreciate the opportunity to run with them” stated Ashley in Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet Victory Lane.
The second Twin 40 feature inverted three from the finish, which now set Allen Huffman starting in to the top spot and Clint King on his outside. The pace truck dove onto pit road and the green flag waved high above the field, Allen and King soared off into turn one, with King taking over the top spot and leading lap one. The first caution flew on lap three as the #8 of Ed Surrett and #48 of Chris Smith both spun around coming out of turn four. King worked his way inside the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, and hit his marks as he pulled away. Neil quickly pulled up to the inside of Allen Huffman, trying to contest for second place with Ashley Huffman and Lee Tissot side by side fight for fifth. Allen started to drift backwards as Neil, Ashley and Tissot, and Lollis all soared past the #51 machine. The second caution flew on lap 18 as the #21 Charlie Neil, #15 of Cameron Williams and #8 Ed Surret spun around in turn three. King once more led the field back to the restart zone with 22 laps left.
With just 12 laps remaining Tissot slid past the #7 of Ashley Huffman to take over second. The third caution flew on lap 30 as the #48 Alpha Electric Silverado looped it around on the front stretch, this would set up for a ten lap fight until the end. King and Tissot paced the field back to the green flag, however Tissot did not have enough left in the tank to catch Clint King as he went on to capture the second Twin 40 feature. “We struggled in the first race, the sun went down, we made some changes, hated to keep seeing that yellow wave. But I would really like to thank Warehouse Design, Kingdom Event Management, Backyard Buildings & Creations LLC, Taylor Stricklin Chassis” stated King in Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet Victory Lane.
Allen Huffman would go on to capture the 2023 Southeast Super Truck Series Championship, and in front of his hometown family and friends. “First off I just got to give God all the Glory, all of the praise! There is just no quit in this team. These guys don't know what that word means. It's a testament to the attitude God has built within this team that even when we probably should quit we can't. There were three races we should not have been able to finish. And one of those we ended up 5th because we simply didn't give up. All 3 Championships are special. All 3 have had their ups and downs and challenges and none of them were won because of what we did. It's because of what God has done and accomplished thru this team in lining every piece up to win them. This one def means a lot because it was our first year stretching our legs outside of home, outside of our local track and going up against some of the best in truck racing, with bigger fields, stiffer competition brand new tracks that we had never even laid eyes on let alone raced at, and still figuring out how to be competitive week in and week out. To do that is amazing. I can't believe we pulled this one off. We had a ton of fun this season even with all the hurdles we had to overcome. I really want to thank NCN Ministries, Everett Chevrolet, Wrenchrags, Western Steer, Carswell Landscaping, Carswell Tree Service, Buzze Racing, Tri-Star Racewear, RE Suspension Harrington Racing Engines, Creech Motorsports, Auto Racing Outreach, AR Bodies, Black Acid Racing Apparel, and New Creation Graphics.
The Series will celebrate our Champions and drivers at the upcoming Championship Banquet, and stay tuned for the 2024 Schedule. Thank you to all of our drivers, teams, sponsors, staff, tracks, and most importantly our fans!
