On Saturday October 21st the Limited Late Models returned to action for the final time of the season. The points battle was coming down to the wire, and this being the final race it was going to be a barn burner of a finish. The teams all unloaded on the beautiful morning, and prepared for the days activities. First practice was up for one of the largest car counts of the season, it was our 2022 Limited Late Model Champion Chase Pollard from Taylorsville, NC who set the bar with the fastest time of 15.571. Chase was followed by Matt Leicht, Trey Canipe, Tyler Chapman and Lance Gatlin. Final practice was up next, and it was Lenoir, NC “Charging” Charlie Watson who set the fastest time in his #9 machine laying down a lap time of 15.535. Trey Canipe, Tyler Chapman, Chase Pollard, and Lance Gatlin rounded out the top five.
It was now time for Qualifying and it was Chase Pollard who claimed the Renegade Race Fuel Pole Award with a lap time of 15.233. Pollard rolled a five on the invert dice which now set Marshall, NC Eugene Norton starting in the top spot for the 75 lap feature later on that evening. The Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet pace truck pulled onto pit road, flagman Timmy Hutson waited patiently for the field to come out of turn four before he turned the drivers loose. The field sailed off into turn one, and it was Trey Canipe who took early advantage and pulled out in front of the drivers, leaving Matt Leicht and Eugene Norton battling for second side by side. Jacob Bradley who has been absent from the series this season was running back in the fourth place, with a two car battle for fifth (Chase Pollard and Charlie Neil). Five laps into the books and the top five started to settle down as they all went back into a single file formation, with Canipe still leading.
Ten laps down and the only change that happened inside the top five was Charlie Watson slipped past Pollard to take over the fifth position. The first caution flew on lap 13, as Heath Silver spun around coming out of turn four and pointed his nose on the inside pit wall. As the pace truck dove back onto pit road, Trey Canipe worked his way inside the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, this time he was not able to pull out front as in the past. Matt Leicht hung right beside of the #5 Hickory Used Car Superstore Chevrolet as they drove off into turn one. The second caution flew just a short time later on lap 15, as Pollard made contact with the outside wall going down the back stretch and cut a right rear tire down and looped it around in turn three. Leicht led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone and hit his marks, as Watson quickly worked his way passed the #27 Ford Fusion of Norton to take over the third place. Neil seen the move Watson just made on Norton and he followed pursuit however came up a little short.
The caution flew again on lap 15, as several drivers collected in a pile up on the back stretch, Brayden Goddard & Heath Silver’s nights ended prematurely. Leicht and Canipe raced back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone with a second row full of Charlie’s. The fourth caution flew on lap 28 as the #12 of Eric Wallace spun around coming out of turn four. Canipe once more led the field back to the restart zone, and tried to hit his marks, however HMS’s long time competitor Charlie Watson had other plans as he quickly jumped out front for the first time all night. Watson crossed the line at the halfway point of the feature. The fifth caution flew just over the halfway mark, on lap 38 as Eugene Norton spun coming out of four. Watson led the field back to the green flag once again, however Norton once again went around in turn three to bring the caution out once again.
Watson one more time led the field to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, this time Canipe was well prepared and he hung right to the outside of Watson as the pair raced side by side. With just a third of the race left, Pollard rebounded from his earlier altercations and worked his way back inside the fifth position. Every position mattered at this point, the seventh caution flew on lap 43 as Josh Gobble came to a stop in turn one. With just 15 laps remaining, three cars tangled in turn one (Norton, Neil, and Chris Phipps). Watson led the field back to the green flag one more time, however it was Dexter (Trey) Canipe III went on to pick up the victory making it his second win of the season and both being at his home track. Matt Leicht, Garrett Lowe, Chase Pollard, and Tyler Chapman rounded out the top five. “Last year we had a bit of any issue at the end of the season, a miscommunication, or whatever I’m super happy right now. Hat’s off to Chase, he ran a hard race and he definitely deserved to finish where he did. I know it was going to be close but I had to stay where I was at, I know Chase was better than me in the race. I just had to try and give it all I had and make it work. Yeah he (dad Tim Lollis) started out with the series when it first started, and I started five years ago” stated TJ Lollis. “First of all I want to do one thing, I want to give God all the Glory” exclaimed Tim.
There was a three way tie for the 2023 Limited Late Model Championship hunt, however the tie breaker went to who had the most wins, most seconds and so on. T.J. Lollis would claim his first Series Championship. The Southeast Super Truck Series next event will be the 2023 Championship Banquet with details to come soon, so stay tuned for that information to come, as well as the 2024 Season Schedule.
