The Southeast Super Truck Series returned to action for a rain make-up date at Lonesome Pine Motorsports Park. They had a month off after continuous rain outs in the month of May. A few of the drivers were not able to make the trip to Southwest Virginia as they had graduations to attend for their family members. The first practice round it was Hickory, North Carolina’s Allen Huffman who set the fastest time, the second practice round it was Cameron Williams who set the pace. And in Qualifying it was Easley South Carolina’s Tim Lollis who captured the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award. Lollis rolled a five on the invert dice so this shook up the whole field for the night, Asheville, NC’s Cameron Williams would now start in the captains seat to kick off the 50 lap feature.
The field lined up behind the Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet pace truck on the track and completed their warm up laps, Williams and Huffman soared off into turn one, Huffman seemed to bottom out on the outside groove as spark flew. Marty Ward and Greg Bohanon Jr were side by side battling for third with Tim Lollis and Chris Chastain right in their tire tracks. Bohanon was able to take over the position from Ward and he quickly set his sights on the rear bumper of the #51 Everett Chevrolet of Huffman. With four laps in the books, Lollis dove to the inside of Ward as the two South Carolina short track veterans were racing door to door for fourth. The first caution flew on lap seven as Bohanon came up the track right in front of Lollis, Lollis made contact with the left rear of the #17 machine of Bohanon and collected Marty Ward as he had no where to go.
Williams led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, Huffman had trouble going through the gear box, which now shuffled him back to fourth on the restart. Lollis and Bohanon worked passed the #51 truck. The second caution flew on lap 17 as Bohanon’s #17 truck came to a stop on the back stretch. Williams once again led the field back to the green flag, this time Huffman went through all the gears with no trouble. The third caution came out with just a handful of laps to go (7) as the leader Cameron Williams spun around going into turn one. Lollis who was now your leader paced the field back to the green flag. Lollis and Huffman touched several times and both drivers were able to keep trucking, Lollis was finally able to get out front of the #51 machine as they entered turn three, then coming out of turn four the #50 of Lollis got sideways once again and Williams was able to capitalize on this as he drove passed the Huffman machine and Lollis to regain the lead. Williams would go on to capture his first career Southeast Super Truck Series win at a track that he had a lot of laps completed at. “I don’t know what was going through my head, all I heard was my dad saying come on, come on, you gotta go, you gotta go. We kept going with about 3 to go and we finally got it. We lost brakes completely with 7 to go, I was having to pump it going into three, and I came over here in turn one and it was just gone.” Stated Cameron Williams in Rick Hendrick Victory Lane.
The Series will be back in action in a few weeks at “The Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars” Hickory Motor Speedway on July 15th. For more information log onto www.southeastsupertrucks.com or any of our social media sites.
