The newly named Honey Hush Boutique Limited Late Models made the first trip down to Anderson Motor Speedway on Saturday April 13th. This season is shaping up to be one of the best to date, as a few familiar faces made their return to the series after taking a few years off: Tyler Worley and Spencer Childers. Tristen Barnes who has competed in mini stocks at Kingsport Speedway. Two Super Truck drivers that did not have their trucks done yet for this race, elected to race a limited, those being of Greg Bohanon Jr and Ed Surrett.
The first practice session was up, and it was Arden, North Carolina’s Matt Leicht driving the Marion Thomas owned #70 Chevrolet Impala SS that topped the charts. Tyler Worley, Justin Sorrow, Chase Pollard and Eugene Norton rounded out the top five. The final practice session it was Taylorsville, North Carolina’s Chase Pollard who topped the charts in his #98 LP Gear Chevrolet Impala SS. Tyler Worley, Justin Sorrow, Tristen Barnes and Ed Surrett rounded out the top five. Matt Leicht claimed the Renegade Race Fuel Pole Award, Leicht would roll a five on the invert dice, which now put Morristown, Tennessee’s Lance Gatlin in his #52 Cotton Eye Joes Chevrolet starting on the top spot for the 75 lap feature.
Bryan Ramey pulled his Double Aught Injury Lawyers pace truck off the track, flagman Dylan Green waited patiently for the field to approach him and he waved the green flag. Gatlin and Worley paced the field through turn one and two side by side. Justin Sorrow and Chase Pollard who made up the second row remained door to door, with Matt Leicht right in their tire tracks. Lap two Gatlin was able to pull out front of Worley, which opened the door as we now had a four way battle for second. The first caution flew on lap 3 as the #81Travers Tool Co, Waters Tire of Chandler Gallman spun around coming out of turn two. Gatlin led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, and quickly jumped back out front of the field leaving a dog fight for second once again.
Matt Leicht quickly worked his way around Sorrow and Worley to take over the second place. With a lap and a half later, Leicht worked his way passed Gatlin to take over the lead. The second caution flew on lap 21, as Eugene Norton looped it around in turn two. Norton suffered slight front end cosmetic damage. Leicht led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, and took off like a rocket. The third caution flew on lap 29 as Justin Sorrow came to a stop on the back straight away. Sorrow suffered a broken shock, and had to be helped back to the pit area by City Towing. They were able to make repairs and get him back out on the track. Leicht once again led the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone. Leicht remained out front of the field as the top three cars were nose to tail (Leicht, Gatlin, and Chase Pollard). They completed lap 50 with just 25 laps remaining.
The fourth caution flew with just under 20 laps to go, as Chase Pollard’s engine expired going into turn three, several cars slid around trying to slow down (Austin Peters, Tyler Worley, and Eugene Norton). After a brief red flag to clean up all the fluids on the track, the engines fired back up in behind the Double Aught Injury Lawyers pace truck. Leicht once again hit his marks inside the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone. With three laps to go, Sorrow had made a surge back through the field of talented drivers and found himself fighting for second. Two to go, Sorrow tapped the rear bumper of Leicht going into three, Leicht got a little side ways and Sorrowed powered up to his door. The pair drag raced down the front straight away, before Sorrow was able to pull out front and down the back stretch. Leicht made one last effort to repay the favor as he nudged the rear bumper of Sorrow, however it was not enough. Justin Sorrow went on to capture the victory after what some thought his night was over early. “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, the officials picked up my shock on the track back there. We had some bad luck but also some good luck too. I want to thank all the fans for coming out, we have the best fans ever. Thanks to my guys for their hard work” stated Sorrow in Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet Victory Lane.
The Series will take a week off before heading to Southwest Virginia’s Lonesome Pine Motorsports Park on April 27th. They will be joined by the STAR Super Stock Series as well as Lonesome Pine’s Street Stocks and Pure 4’s.
