The Southeast Super Truck Series were finally able to get their first race in after having the first two attempts rained out. Everyone was excited to get to the track, lot’s of tough competition new and old faces showed up to compete. The first practice round was up, and it was six time Greenville Pickens Speedway track champion Marty Ward who was piloting the Greg Nix owned Waters Tire #3 machine who set the fast time. Ward also went on to pace the field again in the final practice round. However it was Newport, Tennessee’s Ed Surrett who captured the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award.
Surrett rolled a four on the invert dice, which now set Ward in the top spot for the feature event with two-time Hickory Motor Speedway Super Truck champion Allen Huffman starting on the outside. The Double Aught Injury Lawyer pace truck dove onto pit road and we were ready to get underway. The field soared off into turn one, Ward jumped out front of the drivers, and the door opened under Huffman as Josh Goble dove to the bottom. Goble took over the second position as they came out of turn four, Surrett took advantage of Huffman being hung out on the outside groove. Two laps in the books and Ward was now under pressure for the lead as Goble took a look on the inside. The first caution flew on lap three as Surrett made slight contact on the left rear quarter panel of Huffmans #51, and Huffman looped it around in turn one.
Ward led the drivers back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, and hit his marks. The first two rows remained side by side after completing another lap, Ward and Goble; Surrett and Lollis. Goble was able to dispose of Ward as they came out of turn two, Lollis and Surrett split Ward, they were three wide as they entered the third turn. Lollis went really high coming out of turn four and allowed Ward and Surrett to move on. Ward seemed to be really loose as the next lap coming out of the fourth turn he was sideways and made contact with Surrett’s right rear quarter panel. The storm was calm for a few more laps until Surrett caught the rear bumper of the leader of Goble. He then began to turn up the heat quick on the #65 Blackbear Transmission Silverado. Surrett did not waste any time as he jumped past Goble and took over the lead.
Lollis worked his way passed Goble and took over second on lap eleven, and opened the door as Ward also jumped to the inside trying to take over third place. Chris Chastain seen the other two drivers slip under Goble and he quickly tried his hand at moving the #65 machine back. With twenty laps completed of the 50 scheduled the leader Ed Surrett entered turn one, and lost a spring as it flew out of his truck, and he was way off the pace as he came down the back straight away. Surrett missed pit road and came to a stop on the track to bring out the second caution of the night. Lollis who inherited the lead after Surrett’s misfortune, led the field back to the green flag. However it was short lived as one later the caution flew again, this time for the #72 of Chastain as he spun in turn three and four as well as Surrett. Lollis once again led the field back to the green flag with Ward on his outside. Greg Bohanon Jr who had been quiet all night began to turn up the heat as he was battling Allen Huffman for fourth. The fourth caution flew on lap 27 as heavy smoke was coming out of the leaders truck of Tim Lollis. Lollis came down pit road and his night was over early. Ward who was now back up front as the leader paced the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone and hit his marks with Goble restarting on the outside. Huffman who restarted third quickly jumped to the inside of Goble and took over the second position.
Thirty laps completed as Huffman reeled down the leader (Ward) and was trying to find a opening, The fifth caution flew just a lap later as Greg Bohanon Jr seemed to have blew a tire entering turn three and made hard contact with the outside wall. Ward led the drivers back to the green flag with Huffman on his outside once again. Surrett did not waste any time as he drove under the #51 NCN Ministries Silverado and took over the second position. They clicked off another lap as two trucks got together and made hard contact with the inside wall on the back stretch, those were the #72 of Chris Chastain and #65 Josh Goble. Chastain was able to continue and Goble’s night was over.
With just 18 laps left Ward once again led the field back to the green flag this time with Surrett restarting on his outside. The seventh caution flew just one lap later as the second and third place truck got together on the front straight away, those were Ed Surrett and Allen Huffman. Once again Ward led everyone back to the green flag, now with TJ Williams restarting on the outside. The eighth caution flew with just eight laps left as Bennie Davis came to a stop on the track. Marty Ward went on to capture the first victory of the season. “Im too old for all of this, the doctors just released me to come play but probably didn’t mean to work this hard. But I had a good time, and a good clean race. I just got to thank all these boys they worked really hard. I have done this all of my life, I just got to thank Greg Nix for letting me do this” stated Ward in Rick Hendrick’s City Chevrolet Victory Lane.
