After two rain out postponed races, the SEST Limited Late Models were finally able to show up at the track and they were all eager to be there.Sixteen of the best drivers unloaded at Anderson Motor Speedway for the first race of the season. After two practice rounds everyone went to work on last minute adjustments for qualifying. However it was Belton, South Carolina’s Justin Sorrow who captured the Renegade Race Fuels Pole Award. The reigning 2022 AMS Track Champion announced in the pre race pit party that he was going to be competing in as many of the SEST races as possible this season. Sorrow rolled a three on the invert dice which now set John Gallman to start the race from the top spot, with Chase Pollard starting on his outside.
The pace truck dove onto pit road to kick off the 50 lap feature, and the drivers all sailed off into turn one. Gallman and Pollard raced side by side for the first lap, with a line of drivers full steam in tow. Gallman was finally able to pull out in front of the #98 of Pollard on lap two, but as they came out of turn four the #98 machine drove into the rear bumper of Gallman sending him up the track, Gallman was able to hold on to the car and fall back in line in the fifth position. Pollard who was now the leader, had a mirror full of Sorrow and Blayne Harrison. The first caution flew on lap 23, as debris was in the racing groove in turn one. Pollard paced the field back to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone and soared off into turn one. Sorrow was not going to back down this time as he hung right in there with the leader.
After a three lap battle on the restart, Sorrow was finally able to power past the Taylorsville, NC driver and take over the lead. The second caution flew on lap 29 as Eugene Norton and Austin Peters got together in turn one, Cameron Williams also spun trying to avoid the incident. Sorrow lead the field to the KRC Power Steering Restart Zone, and hit his marks. Pollard was immediately under pressure as the Tazwell, Virginia driver of Blayne Harrison drove to the inside of Pollard. TJ Lollis and Gallman were racing door to door battling for fourth and right in the tire tracks of Pollard and Harrison. Lollis was able to slide past Gallman and Pollard to take over third. With just eight laps remaining, the third caution flew as Phillip Peters spun around coming out of turn four.
Sorrow led the field back to the green flag, this time with Harrison restarting on his outside. The field was all bunched up and racing as hard as they could. The fourth caution flew just one lap later as a chain reaction of several cars bumping into each other sent the leader of Justin Sorrow around in turn two. Multiple cars were collected in this incident (Sorrow, Harrison, Gallman, Austin Peters, Eugene Norton, and Cameron Williams). Lollis who was your new leader after the caution, led the field back to the green flag with Pollard on his outside. The green flag waved and they took off. Garrett Lowe quickly went to work on trying to capture the second place from Pollard. The pair raced door to door for one lap before the fifth caution flew as Austin Peters spun in turn four. Lollis once again led the field back to the green flag, Lowe and Lance Gatlin were fighting tooth and nail for the third position. With just five laps remaining, the sixth caution flew as Justin Sorrow spun around on the front stretch. TJ Lollis went on to capture the first Victory of the 2023 season in front of his hometown crowd. “We had a good run, the car was good in practice, we had a bad qualifying and stuff. Overall the car was really good, we got in a little bump up down here and didn’t mean for that to happen. First of all I want to thank God first and foremost.” stated Lollis in Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet Victory Lane.
